Emerging Leader Program

The Emerging Leader Program (ELP) is a year-long experience designed as an introduction to participate in campus and community activities. ELP experiences are centered on the development of the knowledge, awareness, and skills that are fundamental to leadership. ELP activities include: the Emerging Leader Retreat, Emerging Leader Workshop Series, and Emerging Leader Courses (U495).

Inside the Classroom Fall 2009

Emerging Leader U495 Courses collectively serve as an introduction to the fundamental theories, skills and practices related to leadership. The following courses are offered in both fall and spring semesters:

University 101: Maximizing the College Experience- 2 Credits, EDUC U-495

This class will focus on students creating meaning of the college experience.  Students will develop a framework to navigate and create an outstanding educational experience.  The class will help students appreciate the importance of a liberal arts education and acquaint them with tools, techniques and resources to maximize their personal learning experience.  Students will learn how the university experience is meant to both challenge and support their development.  This course is designed for first-time-in-college students during their initial semester of enrollment.

Leading at IU, 1 Credit- EDUC-U495

A complement to “University 101: Maximizing Your College Experience”, students in this course will learn how to create a purposeful involvement and engagement path, understand a framework or compass for navigating Indiana University and become knowledgeable of what universities do.  Students will also develop a working knowledge of resources available at IU and connect with the history and current leadership of Indiana University.

Outside the Classroom

IUBeginnings Community Plunge
A five-day program through which participants have the opportunity to immerse themselves in service to the greater Bloomington community and its service agencies.


Emerging Leaders Retreat
A weekend program promoting leadership self-awareness, networking, and awareness of available leadership opportunities on campus and in the Bloomington community.
